The name Scanno is derived from the Latin 'Scamnun '. This term was used in Roman times to indicate the borders of a conquered territory which had been divided and given to new owners. It owed its affluence to Alfonso I of Aragon who in regulated the seasonal migration of animals in the region with new rules and taxes. Accompanied by a general resurgence of sheep farming, wool production and related crafts, affluence created a subsequent demand for goldsmiths, lace making and ceramic work for those who benefited most from the local economy.

Today, it is possible to pick up souvenirs or gifts from shops selling the local 'ricami' lace workas well as 'orafa' goldwork and handmade jewellery. All are products of ancient skills which just about survive to this day and the various styles of each have immense regional symbolism. Scanno has always been described as 'la cittaduzza di sapore orientale' which means ' a place of oriental flavor '.

This influence remains in the designs of the local silver and gold work which experts say come straight from Asia Minor.

The residents, at least the more elderly among them, also take pride in wearing traditional clothes around the village. Indeed, the original reputation of the village as a tourist destination came about when renowned photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson photographed the residents in Scanno in their traditional clothes in the 's. It is perhaps not surprising that not everyone chooses to wear the traditional clothes - the skirt alone, which is made from the wool that was the main industry in the village for several centuries, weighs more than 10 kilogrammes!
